Stäedelschule Canteen 1990-92
Designed by Peter Cook and Christine Hawley together with Klaus Bollinger (structural engineer, who subsequently worked with Peter on the Graz Kunsthaus) for the art academy in which they have both taught extensively (Peter Cook as Professor of Architecture from 1984 to 2010).
A small courtyard is appropriated, the existing columns retained, an adjoining room at half a level lower is connected and used as servery and bar.
A simple steel and glass roof and minimum interference with the atmosphere of the courtyard is animated – according to climate needs – by the ability of the roof to open – like a ‘mouth’.
